Traditions
Pea soup night
The Havenclub Amsterdam has some very special traditions. Traditionally every new year start with 'pea soup night'. In the earlier days this was held in the Industrieele Groote Club. During pea soup night the cook would serve several rounds of pea soup, rye bread and bacon. At every table a designated 'Tally man' would keep track of the number of pea soup plates every member at his table had devoured. As soon as every tummy was full, the 'Tally men' would retreat, to establish who had eaten the most of the pea soup. At their return one of the members would usually be totally surprised - at the hilarity of others present - to find out he had eaten a small lake of pea soup and winning a fine bottle of wine. Herewith the Havenclub would reward the member concerned, that in their opinion had a price long due.
Since Dekker's Motion the pea soup dinner has been translocated to Graan voor Visch and the pea soup nowadays is served with an unsurpassed Captains dinner - the Dutch version of the Chinese rice table with a.o. capuchins, smoked bacon, chopped onions, piccalilli en silver onions. The Tally men tradition has since become somewhat obsolete.
Partner night
Annually there is one event, where partners are welcome, so they can ascertain themselves of where their partner is supposed to be the other 9 Thursdays each year. Such a partner event can take on many forms. The Havenclub has organized a Golf day, a cultural dinner at Ruigoord, a long weekend of entertainment - thanks to the then sitting director of DFDS, a member - in Newcastle and - during the 11th luster in 2005 - they have even danced the Polonaise through the Industrieele Groote Club (something that hasn't been appreciated as much by all parties involved, we're afraid...).
Company visits
The Havenclub also tries to regularly make excursions to one of their members' companies or projects. In doing so the Havenclub Amsterdam was one of the first to visit the covered berths at the Waterland terminal after its opening. Also they have visited the Arena during construction, thanks to one of the builders, also a member.
General Assembly
In November each year the General Assembly takes place. Every year the chairman tries to set a new record for the fastest assembly ever. The current record is about 7 minutes. Most of the time is consumed by the Q&A, where the chairmans hammer often is making overtime...
